We all know this blissed out feeling of coming out of a class being whole, complete, balanced, tuned up. A good class for me is when I get up from savasana and have no urge to do one more pose. I do not want one more little stretch or another handstand. It is when my whole body was addressed and my mind cleared.
Since 2006 all I've been teaching was astanga yoga. When I arrived in Austalia in 2012 that had to change as there were simply not enough astanga classes on offer. Having a very solid practice and teaching experience, it wasn't a big deal to teach something different. But what I struggled with was creative sequencing. I was so into ashtanga series, it was hard for me to let go of them and trust my knowledge to come up with my own.
Today things are different though.
I developed a system for teaching that consists of two elements:
1. Sequencing tool that helps me prepare for my classes in 15 minutes. Yes, it's in Excel. And it's super straightforward and easy. I use it at the beginning of the week to come up with a new sequence. I go back to it at the end of the week to refine and polish it.
2. Class structure that I defined is made of several blocks:
- easing into the practice with gentle stretches
- Sun Salute A - because I am such an astangi at heart
- Sun Salute B - with elements of my sequence's focus
- 1 long flow - with elements of mandala / there and back flow/standing, balancing, floor postures
- finishing flow - that includes elements that were not present in all of the above
- meditation / pranayama
- savasana
One day I had 12 sequences in my file. A material enough for 3 months of teaching! This is when I let go of it and was confident enough to teach without it. But whenever I'm uninspired and not sure what to teach - I re-open my file and just pick and choose =) Super convenient and reassuring to have this tool at my fingertips!
